Herbs

According to Dr Aviva Room in Botanical Medicine for Women’s Health, Women’s history has always been woven with plants and the healing arts, particularly botanical medicine and midwifery. In virtually every culture, without exception, women maintained knowledge of herbal healing for the prevention and treatment of common maladies that afflicted their communities, including herbal treatments for women’s complaints.

We know very little about the common gynecologic conditions, for example what causes endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, or uterine fibroids. We do know that many conventional treatments currently being utilized are not supported by evidence of long-term efficacy or safety - for example, the treatment of chronic pelvic pain with hysterectomy.

I strive to offer a realistic perspective of the therapeutic possibilities of botanical medicines for women in easily accessible recommendations. Herbal medicines are not universally effective nor are they always the appropriate treatment, but they can be an important part of an integrative approach to healing. For certain common, mild to moderate, self-limiting, or chronic conditions they may be an appropriate initial approach.

I have worked for the last 4 years with many women in real need. In doing so I have been encouraged to continuously seek knowledge from experienced practitioners, midwife herbalists, and medical doctors to rediscover the legacies and the well-trodden path to improved feminine wellness.

The herbal blends I use are based on my training with Kelly Garza of the Peri Steam Hydrotherapy Institute (Traditional Chinese Medicine herbal formulas) as well as the works of Dr. Aviva Romm and her extensive literature on botanical medicine for women’s health.
