What is Peri Steam Hydrotherapy?

Peri steam hydrotherapy, commonly referred to as "vaginal steaming," is a traditional form of female healing with a long history of practice throughout Africa, Eurasia, Oceania and the Americas.  Vaginal steam therapy is specifically beneficial for menstrual, reproductive, and postpartum health. Hundreds of case studies prove its effectiveness in general maintenance of balance and hygiene, but also a powerful curative for an array of symptoms including: short cycles, long cycles, missing periods, postpartum issues, stagnation, cramps, clots, heavy bleeding, fibroids, scar tissue, endometriosis, bacterial infections, post miscarriage, vaginal dryness, and infertility.

Steam Hydrotherapy is a process that involves boiling water in a pot, allowing the water to cool to a comfortable temperature, then sitting over the pot so that the steam can reach the pelvic area. The water is often infused with minerals and/or herbs to enhance the healing qualities of the steam.

How does steam aid your body’s ability to heal?

A main cause of the pain and other complications that women often experience during their cycles is simply a lack of effective circulation. Steam and heat increase circulation as it facilitates the uterus’ ability to clean, encouraging old residue to drain. Steam therapy utilizes a holistic approach that is consistently tailored to a woman's specific needs. Variables include: choice of herbs, duration of therapy, times in a women's cycle that are best to practice the therapy. Using Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners have been able to determine what herbs increase the benefits of steam therapy. Herb blends are balanced and contain specific properties that address the core needs of women while targeting specific concerns. Steam softens and opens the skin and organ cells allowing absorption of herbal properties in a way that oral ingestion may not optimize.

Postpartum Steam Therapy: An Ancient and Powerful Curative

Motherhood involves a transformation many in the past have honored and held sacred. God speaks to us in His revelation about the difficult but highly rewarding experience of birth. This should inform the way we care for mothers.

Women both need and deserve to be honored during this process. Pregnancy and postpartum care should be provided to the mother with love and understanding.

Peri steam hydrotherapy is a gentle, nourishing therapy for women postpartum. There are numerous benefits gained at this time because the cervix is open unlike any other time. It takes 4-6 weeks to close entirely.

The Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute (PHI) commissioned the following study to provide a foundational design to explore the impact of vaginal steaming on postpartum recovery.
